Abstract

South Africa's segregation laws, known as apartheid, hindered the development of black athletes by subjecting them to systematic discrimination that prevented them from officially representing their country in international sporting competitions. The fight against apartheid in sport was a crucial part of the international movement to abolish the regime of racial segregation in South Africa. Sports were used as a means of protest to denounce and isolate the South African regime, both nationally and internationally.
